Third Quarter we are learning . . . .

Literacy

  • In writing, students will be writing narrative papers to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effect technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. They will also be using temporal words and phrases to signal event order.

  • Students will also be writing biographies this quarter and develop the paper with facts, definitions, and details.

Reading Literature Standards -- We will begin the quarter working on mysteries!

  • Students will ask and answer questions to show understanding of a text and refer back to the text.

  • Students will refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text using terms such as chapter, scene, stanza, etc.

  • Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g. create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting).

  • Students will describe characters in a story (traits, motivations, feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

Reading Informational Standards -- We will be reading and writing biographies this quarter!

  • Students will describe the connection between particular sentences and paragraphs in a text (e.g. comparison, cause/effect, sequence).

  • Students will distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of the text or the characters in a text.

  • Students will describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, or cause & effect.

  • Students will use text features and search tools to locate relevant information on a given topic

  • Students will use information from illustrations and the words to demonstrate understanding of the text.

  • Students will integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.

    Mathematics

  • Students will be able to use tiles and other manipulatives to find and represent area.

  • Students will be able to relate area to multiplication and find the area of rectangular figures.

  • Students will be able to find perimeter using various manipulatives.

  • Students will be able to solve mathematical problems involving perimeter and area of polygons.

  • Students will be able to understand what a fraction is and how to label and draw a particular fraction.

  • Students will be able to show where a fraction is on a number line.

  • Students will be able to explain equivalence of fractions and compare fractions using symbols (<,>,=).
